"Christmas Tree Walking Stick"

"A WALKING STICK MADE FROM A FAMILY CHRISTMAS TREE OVER A HUNDRED YEARS AGO."

Our great grandfather, Winfred Vespucci Hagood, from the Cypress Community near Lydia, S. C., made a walking stick from one of the limbs of their old Christmas tree for his great -grandmother, who was blind.

Her husband was Winfield Scott Hagood and he served in the Civil War..On April 12, 1862, on the battlefield, he was shot thru the chest and the doctor ran a silk scarf saturated with whiskey all the way thru the hole in Winfield's chest to remove any infection and he was able to return home.  In 1867, he stepped down out of the barn door and the rib that was cracked by the bullet, broke and pierced his heart and he died.
